World History Food Drive

In World History class freshmen have been learning about different world religions for the past few weeks. In many of those religions, and in our own, an emphasis is put on helping those in need. We decided to do just that.

World History students are participating in a food drive for the next two weeks to help collect non-perishable items to help needy families before the holiday season. We are only two days into the drive and we have collected many items so far. We’re looking forward to really making a difference in others’ lives and helping those we can.

We will be collecting food between now and November 7th. If you are also interested in donating non-perishable food items, please drop them off in the office or room 206. Thank you.

Future Hilltoppers-Open House

Open House - Catholic Central High School

Future Hilltoppers-Open House

Mark your calendar for our annual Open House!  Current students will be on hand to provide guided tours of Catholic Central High School.  Meet the faculty, school administrators, coaches and students!  Learn about the curriculum, fine arts, athletic programs, clubs, tuition assistance, bus transportation, and much more!  Enjoy performances by our Dance Team, Chorus, and Band!  If you have attended in the past, we invite you to visit again.

Trick or Treat for UNICEF

Key Club will be having our annual Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF this Halloween! Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is a fun and easy fundraiser that raises money for UNICEF. Every $1.80 raised saves two lives--a mother and her child suffering from neonatal tetanus! It is really easy to raise money--simply dress up in a costume, grab some friends, and go door to door trick-or-treating The only difference is that rather than asking for candy, you ask for spare change (a lot of people will still give you candy, so don't worry about missing out). :)

To participate, please pick up the special UNICEF collection boxes from me after school in the MAC on Friday, or email me to arrange to receive one ahead of time. You can choose to go with your friends in your own neighborhood, or I will also be leading a group of students here in Burlington around the neighborhood behind school from 6-8 PM. If you want to join us to trick-or-treat as a group, please meet us at school in the MAC on Friday at 6 PM. Both Key Club members and non-members are welcome to participate!

***Please return your box containing all money raised to me or the office on Monday with your name on it.***

Meet Dr. Mark Sheldon - Art Department

Dr. Mark Sheldon

Dr. Sheldon has spent his career in education studying at Carroll College, Illinois State University, U. W. Oshkosh, U.W. Parkside, U. W. Milwaukee, U.W.Whitewater and most recently earned a doctorate degree in Education and Organizational Leadership from Cardinal Stritch University.  He has been a teacher of Art and Design, a Supervisor for Talented and Gifted Programming, and a School Principal over the past 38 years. He helped lead the BHS Art & Design Department achieve the award of Art Department of the Year in 1993 and was awarded Administrator of the Year Award in 2006.

Dr. Sheldon met Mrs. Sheldon in a design class when they were in college together in 1966.  He owes so much of his understanding of teaching and learning to the time they have spent together (48 years!) and to Mrs. Sheldon’s high level of expertise and caring for people.

Dr. Sheldon and Mrs. Sheldons’ grown children are professional designers. Their son, Craig works in Atlanta as a professional animator and their daughter, Robin works as a fashion designer in Manhattan.

This is Dr. Sheldon’s 8th year at CCHS and he is very pleased with this school and the many opportunities it provides for students to gain leadership experience in a college-prep academic environment.

The thing that gives Dr. Sheldon his biggest reward is seeing students learn and prosper.  Learn by doing is something core to his philosophy.  And in the Art & Design area, problem-solving and higher level thinking are part of what makes the learning fun!  Many students have been award winners at local and state levels with their Art & Design pieces and several recent graduates are pursuing degrees in Art & Design-related fields.

The following courses are taught by either Dr. Sheldon or by Mrs. Sheldon:

The Story behind the Quote - Alternate T-Shirt 2014

Sara Pederson
At the beginning of the year my Grandma (Dianne Smetana) went into emergency surgery for her gallbladder and they found two types of cancer in her; one of which was stage 4. She went through a hard and long recovery from her surgery, and right when she became well enough; she started chemo therapy to treat the cancer.

My grandma gets thrown one punch after the other, and my family wishes we could all share her suffering, because she has to carry such a heavy cross. However, my Grandma stays so strong for us, and she keeps her faith and trust in Jesus that things will get better.

Throughout her battle, she's kept a quote on her refrigerator that keeps her going. It reads, "Tough times don't last, but tough people do." This quote can remind everyone, not only my Grandma, that we can become stronger from our hard times. She sets a great example of not letting tough times take you down.

I hope this quote can inspire you as much as it inspires my Grandma and I!

US History Students Enjoyed a Special Visit from Dr. Gardiner!

5th Hour 1758 3.jpg

On Tuesday, October 14, US History students at Catholic Central were blessed to have spent a day learning from Dr. Richard Gardiner. Dr. Gardiner was a former teacher at Catholic Central, and is currently a professor at Columbus State University located in Columbus, GA.

On this day Dr. Gardiner came to school ready to instruct the US History students as though they were scholars at the College of New Jersey in 1758. Topics included politics, theology, geography, gender issues, science and philosophy. Students were engaged as they asked questions and were examined by the professor all to give the students a chance to enhance their understanding of a crucial time period in American History. Questions regarding the theories of Locke, Franklin, Whitefield, Bacon, and Edwards all became relevant topics to the students throughout their time with Dr. Gardiner as they became the scholars, and Dr. Gardiner - their President of the college.

This style of learning (living history in the classroom) was first brought to Catholic Central by Dr. Gardiner, however Mr. Meddaugh, learning this practice from Dr. Gardiner, uses this learning activity multiple times a year - a practice in which the students find to be a fun, engaging and a great academic practice within the US History curriculum.

Below are some images from this day:

1758 5.jpg
Students in 1st Hour are discussing the question of free will with President Edwards - discussing the President’s own works on free will and the beliefs of Predestination, and which should young scholars follow as their guiding theological principle.
3rd Hour 1758 1.jpg
3rd Hour students are being prepped for their examination. In order to be qualified students at the College of New Jersey, these students had to answer philosophical questions that would help guide their thought processes in their future endeavors.

5th Hour 1758 1.jpg

5th Hour students are encouraged through discussion to value Locke’s theories of government, and to question the small rebellion that is being started by a few students at Harvard that call themselves the “Sons of Liberty”.
8th Hour 1758 1.jpg
8th Hour students engaged at the role of smallpox in society - and the new discovery of an inoculation that attempts to prevent the pox from destroying society. Ethical, moral and theological questions were all debated surrounding the topic of the smallpox inoculation.
