Summer Volunteer Opportunity

The Burlington Public Library is yet again looking for high school student volunteers to work the summer reading program. This would involve helping out at events and/or working the registration/prize table. If you work the prize desk, you can work on homework or read while waiting for someone to come up to you for help. Shifts are 2 hours each and run throughout the day. You can sign up for as much or as little as you want--you don't have to work the whole summer if you don't want to, and you can work different time slots (to accommodate work schedules and your summer plans). Sign-ups are online this year, so check out the flier or you can pick up a paper copy in the office.

US History Immersion -- 1880 Tombstone

US History students turned into Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp, Curly Bill Brocius, cowboys, buffalo hunters, gold miners and the law. Students discussed the rail, life after the Civil War, mining, new technology, Indian affairs, homesteading, business all the while trying on the new fashion (some man named Strauss patents this new type of pant in 1873... I'm not sure, but I think it is going to be big)

CARTS Program

For the upcoming Prom and Graduation season, Operation Click will be holding what is called the CARTS program & host a teen driving awareness assembly.  The CARTS (Community Alcohol Resistance for Teens and Students) program uses hands on approaches to educate teen drivers about the perils of drinking and driving.

On April 17th, Operation Click will hold an all school assembly involving the following things:
  1. Showcase our Public Service Announcement/Video on safe driving for teens;
  2. Mr. Tim McCourt will come to talk with our students about teen driving;
  3. CARTS Program - How is works, Sign Up, Requirements, etc.
The assembly will be at 9:45 in Topper Hall.  We welcome anyone who would like to attend the assembly to learn more information!

On April 20th & 21st, students will experience the CARTS program using specially equipped golf carts.  Students wear Fatal Vision goggles and drive a closed course to test their judgment, ability, reflexes, and instinct.  Fatal Vision goggles are worn to simulate the effects of alcohol on eyesight and perception and range in strength from imitating the legal blood alcohol limit to three times that limit.

Also, if you are interested in seeing the CARTS program or learning more about it, please contact Ms. Racky.

Special Viewing of Godspell: 2012 Revised Version

Junior high students from St. Peter, St. Thomas, St. Charles, and St. Mary joined us in a special viewing of Godspell today in Topper Hall.  Everyone had a great time, some guests were able to sit on stage and become part of the Godspell production!  Afterwards, the cast and crew had a Q&A session in which the junior high students were able to get a glimpse of behind-the-scene action that takes place while putting together a musical.

The cast and crew are excited for the show and hope to see you this weekend!

Tickets are still available!  Please click here for more information.

Set Design for Godspell: 2012 Revised Version

This year's Design Studio students (Beth, Edgar, Rafaella, Luke, Gavin, Zach, Christian, and Matt) developed and painted the design you see in the photos.  They studied geometric artists, created prototypes on photoshop, and Rafaella's design was chosen (with Gavin's idea used about arrangement of her design shapes).  Thank you to the additional students in the afternoon ceramics classes who pitched in at the last minute to help finish details (Bridget, Sage, Sarah, Jeff, Andy, Kathleen, and Beth.)

It makes us feel more like the CC family when our original designs appear and support the musical sets, as we have been doing for some years now.

Thank you to all the efforts of the Design Studio Class!

Child Abuse Prevention Month -- Five Steps To Safer Environments

The Archdiocese of Milwaukee mandates that all people who work and volunteer with children and youth in our parishes and schools must undergo safe environment education.  The education details five steps to prevent child sexual abuse:  Know the warning signs of an inappropriate relationship with a child.

  1. Know the warning signs!
  2. Control access to children by carefully selecting the adults who work with children and youth.
  3. Monitor all programs for the safety of children and youth.
  4. Be aware of and sensitive to what is going on in the lives of children.
  5. Communicate concerns to the appropriate person in authority.

Italian Class Featured in the Italian Times

Student Report News from Catholic Central of Burlington

Translation of Article:

Best wishes to all the kind members of the Italian Community Center.

We are the students of the Italian class at Catholic Central High School in Burlington:  Sarah, Francesca, Greg, Jack, and Matt.  Our instructor is Mrs. Rosa Tadeo.  We are sending you news from our class.  Greg and Jack are second year students and for Sarah, Francesca, and Matt, this is our first year.

What do we do in class?  We study grammar, we read to practice pronunciation, we speak together, and we play games to learn the language.

In past weeks we have studied the family, the house, the city, and food.  We also study Italian culture.  For example, we studied modern design of furniture in Italian houses.  We also do different interesting projects.  In the lesson for foods, we made green spinach noodles in class.  They were delicious for lunch!  Studying the calendar, we enjoyed learning about the Carnevale of Venice.
Now we are speaking about work:  What types of work are there in Italy?  What jobs would be like to do?  We have also studied about emigration to America by watching a part of a very interesting program:  “The Italian Americans.”

We are sending you photos from our “project pasta.”  Thank you very much for your help for our class.  We love to study Italian!

Yours,

Sarah Counsell, Francesca Frederick, Greg Sember
Jack DeSmidt, Matt Cherek

Keeping Our Promise To Protect

April is national Child Abuse Prevention Month.  It is most appropriate that Child Abuse Prevention Month is held during the Easter season.  There is no better time than Easter to celebrate the protection of our most valuable gift from God -- our children.

Upcoming Safeguarding Session

If you are planning on chaperoning or volunteering for any upcoming school events, please be aware that you will need to attend a Safeguarding session.  We do have an upcoming class here on campus!

Wednesday, April 22nd in Topper Hall from 6:00pm - 9:00pm.

Safe Environment Week Information

For information about this year's Safe Environment Week, as well as bulletin announcements and initiatives for keeping children and youth safe, please visit the archdiocesan website (www.archmil.org) and click on “Safeguarding All of God’s Family.”

Please use the following as a pulpit announcement for April 11 & 12:

Safe Environment Week
Pulpit Announcement for April 11-12

In the United States, April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Although safeguarding all of God’s children is a daily occurrence in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, annually, the month of April is set aside so every parish and school, as well as the entire Catholic community, may all together focus on the importance of keeping children and youth safe.

Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki has designated this coming week as Safe Environment Week throughout the archdiocese.   This is a time when everyone has the opportunity to simultaneously focus on abuse prevention and the archdiocesan initiatives that are already underway.   This year’s focus will be on “Respect” and the importance of sustaining and maintaining respect for all of God’s family.

Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki has issued a Proclamation for Safe Environment week. Please read at all Masses. Click here to access Proclamation.
