Meet Our Very Own Susan Dosemagen!
Susan Dosemagen makes up the other half of the Social Studies Department. This is her first year at Catholic Central High School. Before CCHS, Susan taught at Union Grove High School, Washington Park High School, and Westosha Central High School in long-term subbing positions. She received her bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Journalism from University of Wisconsin- Madison, her master’s degree in Journalism from Northwestern University and is one credit away from her master’s degree in Teaching from Cardinal Stritch University. At Catholic Central she teaches 20th Century U.S. History, World History, and U.S. Government. In addition to that, she is also the Student Council and Model UN advisor.
As a high school social studies teacher, it is her goal to help all students become interested, informed and active members of society. For this to happen, she feels that it is her duty to show students the relevance of history and the relationship between the past, present and their future. These connections stimulate interest and ignite a desire to learn. She aims to find ways to make learning more hands-on and exciting for students, especially through student-led projects.
In 20th Century U.S. History, students recently completed class videos detailing the rise of the Third Reich. For this project, students had complete control over the entire process: researching the topic, writing the script, filming “historians” and recreations of events, and editing and producing the video. They will also later have the opportunity for more hands-on activities, such as: class debates, presentations, Socratic seminars, and other projects. As this class is a graduation requirement, so is their senior thesis. Each student will select a topic from the 20th century that they would like to research for a culminating thesis project.

In U.S. Government, the class takes a student-led approach to learning the functions and importance of government. While discussing the executive branch and election process, students participated in their own school-wide election for president of CCHS. Each candidate, with the support of a campaign team, created a website complete with posters, videos, platform stance explanations, and editorials supporting their candidacy. Through the remainder of the class they will also participate in debates, the creation of their own state, and a courtroom simulation in which students will have the opportunity to play the role of lawyer, plaintiff, defendant, or others.

In World History, students learn about important people and eras of the past while making comparisons to modern times. Students complete projects where they create visual representations of their topic to then share with the class. As this is a year-long course, students will have many opportunities to research topics and create projects. Upcoming plans include recreations of ancient times, a look at Roman and Greek Mythology, Socratic seminars, group presentations, and more creative projects.

Mrs. Michelle Dean Science Department
Science
Catholic
Central High School has a variety of hands-on, laboratory science courses that
allow you to explore the natural world. Mrs. Dean teaches Freshman Integrated
Science (required for all freshman) and upper level elective courses such as Environmental
Science, Physical Geology, Biotechnology and AP Biology. Here is a brief description of some of what you will be
studying in each course.
Integrated
Science – You will perform labs to
reinforce the scientific experimentation process. Several of the labs allow you
to decide how to set up the experiment and support your hypothesis. Topics
covered come from chemistry and physics such as heat and temperature and
Newton’s laws. There are also several design labs in which you will design egg cars,
balloon racers and bridges.
Environmental
Science – You
will explore the history of the environmental movement and examine ways society
can become more sustainable. Ecosystems will be examined along with the flora
and fauna in them. Topics will include predator-prey relationships, endangered
species and the importance of water sheds. If you enjoy nature and want to help
our planet out, this is the class for you.
Physical Geology – This class is all about the solid Earth.
You will learn about the history of our earth, earthquakes, volcanoes, mountain
building and rock formation. It is our earth at its finest. The class includes
a project that takes the class on virtual trips to several of our national
parks.
Biotechnology – Biotech allows you to take life
science concepts and apply them. You will study DNA and proteins in a heavily
lab based class. In the labs you will extract your own DNA and enzymes from
tissues. You will use gel electrophoresis to examine DNA and solve a crime. You
will transform bacteria and make it glow in the dark. Now that is cool science!
AP Biology – If you are interested in pursuing
science in college and are up for a challenge, take this class. You will study
biology concepts in detail and learn how these concepts are connected to your
health and to making your environment a better place. Several labs allow you to
ask a question and design an experiment. You will fine tune your lab skills and
data analysis skills. Data analysis is important for the ACT. You will also be
better prepared for college science courses and possibly earn college credit.
Integrated science gives all students the background
knowledge and science skills to succeed to in future science courses. The upper
level science courses give students the opportunity to study various science
disciplines that they may not be familiar with or that that have a desire to
learn more about. The AP biology course is preparing students for college level
science courses through a rigorous study of life and the possibility of earning
college credit. All these courses connect science knowledge with real world
issues.

English Department - Katie Barnhart
Katie Barnhart is the newest member of the English department here at Catholic Central. She is also the cheerleading coach as well as the newspaper and yearbook advisors. Katie loves being apart of the welcoming and enthusiastic Catholic Central family!
Katie is originally from New England and earned her B.A. degree in English at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Most recently, she taught Freshman Writing at Marquette University while taking graduate classes in English.
This semester, Katie is teaching journalism (a first semester elective), English II (the English requirement for sophomores) and World Literature (the English requirement for seniors not in AP). Students expect to work together and balance laughing and having fun while working productively and producing high quality work at the same time.
In journalism, you see students conducting interviews, creating podcasts, and making their own TV broadcasts. In her English II and World Literature classes, you will find students writing skits and stories to demonstrate higher level understanding of vocabulary and literary devices, adopting the personas of fictional characters to work on characterization, and creating presentations to teach concepts alongside her in the classroom.
In English II and World Literature, students are consistently challenged to take their writing to the next level. Katie has students working on fiction and nonfiction writing and assigns papers where students are responsible for choosing their topic and completing their own research. Through peer review and writing workshops, the students work together as a class to improve their ability to construct a classical argument.
Katie takes a two-fold approach to the study of literature. Students work within the text itself to identify classical literary devices while examining how the work informs and is informed by history and culture. Through this approach, students are able to tease out the universal themes from works of literature . Students in English II just finished reading Fahrenheit 451 where they studied the influence of censorship, communism, and the Red Scare on the content of the novel while examining the relationship to the present day. Seniors in World Literature studied the influence of kinship, military prowess, and heroism on works such as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Wanderer, and Beowulf.
As the sophomores begin to read Othello and the seniors begin to read Macbeth, they will learn how to see the volatility of religion and the increased secularization of society during the Renaissance through the actions and descriptions of the characters while seeing the universal human emotions of rejection, revenge, greed, and ambition.
Katie will continue this combined style of literary study as her students progress through the year. The sophomores will travel the perilous Pacific Ocean with Pondicherry in the Life of Pie and feel the pain of unrequited love with Gatsby in The Great Gatsby. The seniors will experience Amir’s guilt from lack of action and the redemption that comes from doing the right thing in the face of danger in The Kite Runner. The seniors will then continue their examination of the evolving definitions and manifestations of heroism as they engage with modern and contemporary literature and culture.
Katie has truly enjoyed getting to know the students, teachers, staff, and parents that make Catholic Central the unique and remarkable place that it is. She hopes to make Catholic Central her home for a long time!

World History Food Drive
In World History class freshmen have been learning about different world religions for the past few weeks. In many of those religions, and in our own, an emphasis is put on helping those in need. We decided to do just that.
World History students are participating in a food drive for the next two weeks to help collect non-perishable items to help needy families before the holiday season. We are only two days into the drive and we have collected many items so far. We’re looking forward to really making a difference in others’ lives and helping those we can.
We will be collecting food between now and November 7th. If you are also interested in donating non-perishable food items, please drop them off in the office or room 206. Thank you.
Future Hilltoppers-Open House
Future Hilltoppers-Open House
Mark your calendar for our annual Open House! Current students will be on hand to provide guided tours of Catholic Central High School. Meet the faculty, school administrators, coaches and students! Learn about the curriculum, fine arts, athletic programs, clubs, tuition assistance, bus transportation, and much more! Enjoy performances by our Dance Team, Chorus, and Band! If you have attended in the past, we invite you to visit again.
Trick or Treat for UNICEF
Key Club will be having our annual Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF this Halloween! Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF is a fun and easy fundraiser that raises money for UNICEF. Every $1.80 raised saves two lives--a mother and her child suffering from neonatal tetanus! It is really easy to raise money--simply dress up in a costume, grab some friends, and go door to door trick-or-treating The only difference is that rather than asking for candy, you ask for spare change (a lot of people will still give you candy, so don't worry about missing out). :)
To participate, please pick up the special UNICEF collection boxes from me after school in the MAC on Friday, or email me to arrange to receive one ahead of time. You can choose to go with your friends in your own neighborhood, or I will also be leading a group of students here in Burlington around the neighborhood behind school from 6-8 PM. If you want to join us to trick-or-treat as a group, please meet us at school in the MAC on Friday at 6 PM. Both Key Club members and non-members are welcome to participate!
***Please return your box containing all money raised to me or the office on Monday with your name on it.***
