Meet Our Very Own Susan Dosemagen!
Susan Dosemagen makes up the other half of the Social Studies Department. This is her first year at Catholic Central High School. Before CCHS, Susan taught at Union Grove High School, Washington Park High School, and Westosha Central High School in long-term subbing positions. She received her bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Journalism from University of Wisconsin- Madison, her master’s degree in Journalism from Northwestern University and is one credit away from her master’s degree in Teaching from Cardinal Stritch University. At Catholic Central she teaches 20th Century U.S. History, World History, and U.S. Government. In addition to that, she is also the Student Council and Model UN advisor.
As a high school social studies teacher, it is her goal to help all students become interested, informed and active members of society. For this to happen, she feels that it is her duty to show students the relevance of history and the relationship between the past, present and their future. These connections stimulate interest and ignite a desire to learn. She aims to find ways to make learning more hands-on and exciting for students, especially through student-led projects.
In 20th Century U.S. History, students recently completed class videos detailing the rise of the Third Reich. For this project, students had complete control over the entire process: researching the topic, writing the script, filming “historians” and recreations of events, and editing and producing the video. They will also later have the opportunity for more hands-on activities, such as: class debates, presentations, Socratic seminars, and other projects. As this class is a graduation requirement, so is their senior thesis. Each student will select a topic from the 20th century that they would like to research for a culminating thesis project.

In U.S. Government, the class takes a student-led approach to learning the functions and importance of government. While discussing the executive branch and election process, students participated in their own school-wide election for president of CCHS. Each candidate, with the support of a campaign team, created a website complete with posters, videos, platform stance explanations, and editorials supporting their candidacy. Through the remainder of the class they will also participate in debates, the creation of their own state, and a courtroom simulation in which students will have the opportunity to play the role of lawyer, plaintiff, defendant, or others.

In World History, students learn about important people and eras of the past while making comparisons to modern times. Students complete projects where they create visual representations of their topic to then share with the class. As this is a year-long course, students will have many opportunities to research topics and create projects. Upcoming plans include recreations of ancient times, a look at Roman and Greek Mythology, Socratic seminars, group presentations, and more creative projects.

Mrs. Michelle Dean Science Department
Science
Catholic
Central High School has a variety of hands-on, laboratory science courses that
allow you to explore the natural world. Mrs. Dean teaches Freshman Integrated
Science (required for all freshman) and upper level elective courses such as Environmental
Science, Physical Geology, Biotechnology and AP Biology. Here is a brief description of some of what you will be
studying in each course.
Integrated
Science – You will perform labs to
reinforce the scientific experimentation process. Several of the labs allow you
to decide how to set up the experiment and support your hypothesis. Topics
covered come from chemistry and physics such as heat and temperature and
Newton’s laws. There are also several design labs in which you will design egg cars,
balloon racers and bridges.
Environmental
Science – You
will explore the history of the environmental movement and examine ways society
can become more sustainable. Ecosystems will be examined along with the flora
and fauna in them. Topics will include predator-prey relationships, endangered
species and the importance of water sheds. If you enjoy nature and want to help
our planet out, this is the class for you.
Physical Geology – This class is all about the solid Earth.
You will learn about the history of our earth, earthquakes, volcanoes, mountain
building and rock formation. It is our earth at its finest. The class includes
a project that takes the class on virtual trips to several of our national
parks.
Biotechnology – Biotech allows you to take life
science concepts and apply them. You will study DNA and proteins in a heavily
lab based class. In the labs you will extract your own DNA and enzymes from
tissues. You will use gel electrophoresis to examine DNA and solve a crime. You
will transform bacteria and make it glow in the dark. Now that is cool science!
AP Biology – If you are interested in pursuing
science in college and are up for a challenge, take this class. You will study
biology concepts in detail and learn how these concepts are connected to your
health and to making your environment a better place. Several labs allow you to
ask a question and design an experiment. You will fine tune your lab skills and
data analysis skills. Data analysis is important for the ACT. You will also be
better prepared for college science courses and possibly earn college credit.
Integrated science gives all students the background
knowledge and science skills to succeed to in future science courses. The upper
level science courses give students the opportunity to study various science
disciplines that they may not be familiar with or that that have a desire to
learn more about. The AP biology course is preparing students for college level
science courses through a rigorous study of life and the possibility of earning
college credit. All these courses connect science knowledge with real world
issues.

Opportunities for Young Men Considering the Priesthood
Below are a couple opportunities for men considering the priesthood or interested in discerning their calling. Please click on the appropriate links for further information.
A St. Andrew Dinner gives priests an opportunity to invite young men (high school or older) who think they have the qualities needed to be a good priest. This dinner will include seminarians and other priests. The young men who are invited will have a chance to ask questions in a relaxed atmosphere, learn more about life as a priest and hear vocation stories. Bishop Hying and Fr. Luke Strand will also be present to interact, support and encourage the young men to follow the Lord's call.
